1969
Matthews Petroleum begins when Richard Matthews comes upon the opportunity to buy a small fuel distribution business from W.A. Field delivering 44 gallon drums for ESSO.Over the next few years Richard and his wife Pauline work from a small depot in Albert Street Port Fairy delivering fuel to the surrounding farms and businesses with one delivery truck.
1980
Matthews Petroleum changes distributorshipto Caltex.
1985
The company moves into the wider Warrnambool distributorship for Caltex.
A number of other small fuel distributorships in the surrounding area are purchased into the business over the next decade. Matthews Petroleum now has a fleet of trucks that distributes fuel to a large. number of businesses in a variety of industries such as farming, fishing and transport.
1995
MP acquires retail sites in Warrnambool, Terang, Camperdown and Port Fairy as well as operating the wholesale distributorship in the region’s vast rural area. Richard’s youngest son David starts working at the Head Office dealing directly with delivery accounts.
2002
Caltex and Ampol merge. Matthews Petroleum acquires the Kain & Shelton Ampol distributorship in Warrnambool.
2013
MP acquires the BP fuel depot in Warrnambool and the company changes distributorship to BP covering the region that extends from Millicent in SA, to Geelong and to the North of Hamilton in Victoria.
Present Day
Matthews Petroleum is family owned and operated. Richard in his role of Director oversees every aspect of the company and David in his role of General Manager works hands on in all aspects of the operations to provide outstanding service to their customers. The business employs directly 45 staff and 80 plus staff through the retail chain of 12 service stations. A fleet of 18 trucks delivers fuel to a wide range of industries in the SW region of Victoria and SE region of South Australia. MP provides credit to their retail and wholesale customers through the Matthews BP fuel card.
